NEVER HAD PETS

When a child.

My parents did have dog once, a little Scotty called Punch.  He got jealous of me and because he bit me once, when I was a baby, they had to find another home for him.   So I never had a pet.   My sister was allowed to have a Tortoise, I felt a little peeved about that as I had never been allowed a pet.  Tortoises kept getting out of the garden and lost.  When I first married we had an upstairs flat and mice!   So we got a pair of kittens, (Pinkie & Perky)   We never saw the mice again, they just didn’t stay, they were never caught by the cats.  When we moved to Banbury we decided to take a puppy in.  The puppy ate anything & every thing, we often saw Perky's head in Michelle’s jaws, luckily it was playful and the cat put up with it, but Pinkie ran a mile!.  We had to find a  new home  for Michelle as we couldn’t really cope.  A few years later a  friend wanted us to cat-sit two cats for her.  We never saw that friend again , nor one of the cats it ran away, couldn’t stand other cats.  BUT  Squeak did stay with us and became a  very loving cat.  The  most tragic day  was when I came  home one  day and found that dear Perky had been run over  by a  car in the drive way near our  house.   Tim &  I were  crying for at least half an hour. This was the  first time I had lost a pet.  We now had two cats and they both moved with us to Mablethorpe  from Banbury in 1978.  We (Christine & I) had  bought a larger house with large  garden to run as a Vegetarian Guest house.   After a couple of years some  friends of ours down the  road had some kittens they wanted a home  for.  So that is how we acquired  Bubbles.  She was a lovely black with white bib and white socks kitten.  We decided  to let her  have her  first  litter, the  first two kittens  were  born before Bubbles was old enough to care for them, the  one  live  birth did not survive  many days.   But a  few  months later Bubbles gave birth to two lovely kittens whom we kept  and called Humpty and Gemima.   She  brought up her kittens  well, and obviously really enjoyed having them.  We decided to then to have them all neutered at the appropriate  time, so no more were  born.  Pinky and Squeak gradually  learnt to accept the  new kittens.  But Pinky had been ill with kidney disease for  awhile, but the  vet said so long as he was not in undue pain he should  live his  life out (on a  low protein diet)  Well one  morning Christine  found him dead in the  cat flap.  More tears.  Then a few months later Squeak never returned. We never  saw her again.
