My interest in photography started in my early years, as my father had two cameras. One was a Kodak Box camera, and more interestingly an old bellows camera that took photos on glass slides. I still have the bellows camera, but sadly the box camera has disappeared.. I can no long use this camera as I have no glass negatives. I remember taking a picture of a blue tit on our bird table, and it came out quite well but I have no longer got it, sadly. I do however have several pictures I took on dad's box camera; the earliest that I know were mine was when I took some pictures of the stands that we had for the Boy Scouts' fairs we held in our garden. I took the pictures to advertise the following year’s fairs on posters. After that I took pictures of all my cousins, and the occasional one on holiday. Then I got my own camera. It was a 35 mm camera taking slides or photos. I tended to take colour slides, the camera had more facilities than Dad's old box camera, in that I could take time exposures, (Set time or long-time by holding button down) and delayed time (to get in my own photos!) I preferred colour slides best as one could view via a projector on to a screen. I was also able to vary the focus, and get some quite close up pictures. Later with more knowledge I found I could get really close up by putting supplementary lenses in front. I took a few close- ups of stamps.. One of my favourite tricks was using the time exposure facility to take night pictures of move cars etc, leaving their light trails as kind of ghosts. But I also found I could cheat and take several pictures on top of each other, by holding the rewind button whilst winding on the film. This meant that the film did NOT wind on to the next position, but left the film in the same position. I took many night pictures with as many as 7 pictures on top of each other. Also of fireworks. I also experimented with moving the camera whilst holding the camera open, at night! These “trick” pictures had to be done at night, otherwise they would be grossly overexposed. I have included several examples of each of these in my pictures you can view from my Webshots albums |
