When I first moved to Scarborough in March 1990, I looked around the various drama clubs and went see plays by them to get an idea which one I would like to join.   My choice, was I think a wise one.  I chose Phoenix.  It was founded out of the ashes of two previous societies in 1948 or thereabouts.   It went from strength to strength.   The routine since I joined has been to put on one three act play in June and since it restarted in 6 years ago Phoenix have entered a play in the one act Drama Festival in November.  I have had a part to play in nearly every production since I joined and have been a member of the committee for several years.   The first production I was in was a very small part + plus some of the sound effects in “One For the Pot”.  A farce.   My favourite plays that we have performed have been in the last few years.   “When We Are Married” by     where I was the hen-pecked husband; ”Hobson’s Choice”   where I was the Scottish doctor and had to learn to speak with a Scottish accent;  then there was “Pride & Prejudice” an adaptation from Jane Austen's book where I probably had my most challenging part as Collins. I had two good smallish parts in one act plays firstly the aging debonair man in “ the Last Scene of All” and a year later (2001) I  was Ernest in “Up the Garden Path”.   Several times I have taken on a new role, that of Stage manager.

More recently we have performed AGATHA CHRISTIE’s “And Then There Were None” In June  2001(I had the part of Rogers, the Man Servant, butler…..).  June 2002 we performed Noel Coward’s  “Blithe Spirit”

June 2003  “A Murder is Announced” by Agatha Christie, and last year June 2004  J B Priestley’s “An Inspector calls”.  I assisted backstage in 2002, and had a small part in 2003 as a policeman,  and last year I was Stage  manager.  This  year 2004 I will again be stage manager of Robin Newman’s production of  “Relative Values” by Noel Coward.

For all these last few years I have also been the programme editor  and publicity manager,.

The  theatre we hire  is the YMCA Theatre SCARBOROUGH
