I am a member of the Scarborough Philatelic Society, have been since I moved to Scarborough in 1990. It was not long before I was elected to serve on the committee. I have been chairman for about 5 years, vice chairman at least two more and am now the secretary. And have been since Jan 2000. The club started in 1938, the year before I was born!. It went from strength to strength. But like most stamp clubs the membership tends to be mainly people over 50. I also edit and publish the monthly newsletter. A sample one is scanned on the following page. My history of stamp club memberships. This is the order that I joined the various clubs. 1) Newlands Road Philatelic Society (Founder) 2) The Skinners’ School PS 3) Tunbridge Wells PS 4) World Association of Young Stamp Collectors (disbanded) 5) Medway Towns PS 6) Edlington School PS (Teacher/ founder) 7) Weir Hall School PS (Teacher/ founder) 8) Bicester School PS (Teacher/ Founder) 9) Boston Grammar School PS (Teacher/ Founder) 10) Mablethorpe & District PS 11) Claremont Fan Court School PS ( Teacher/founder) 12) Leatherhead PS 13) Redhill & Reigate PS 14) Scarborough PS 15) Burma Study Circle (International) 16) Machin Collectors Club (National) 17) GB Overprints Society (National) 18) Tibet & Nepal Philatelic Society (international) I am at present a member of the last FIVE clubs. I am also a member of and help run, two Yahoo clubs on the internet. The Scarborough PS every year holds annual competitions in several classes. I usually find favour in one or two and often win at least one of the trophies. The Society is a member of the YPA (Yorkshire Philatelic Association, in which most societies in the whole of YORKSHIRE are members), at the AGM the societies compete against each other. In 2004 My entry, “The ½p Machin” won the National class (UK stamps) and came second in the overall competition, being beaten by one point only. In addition I came second in another other class, the Commonwealth Class with my collection of “Irish Free State”, and 4th in the “Cinderella Class” with my collection of “Wonderland” These entries can be seen in my Webshots photo albums.
